Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer affects thousands of people in the U.S. every year. However, it's highly treatable and curable when diagnosed in its early stages.

One of the reasons why it's important to see your dentist regularly is that you can get oral cancer screening done. Oral cancer screening is included in every routine dental checkup.

Many do not know that oral cancer is quite common. Typically, it is associated with behaviors like smoking and drinking. However, even those who do not participate in these behaviors are still susceptible to oral cancer. In fact, disease numbers are on the rise. The American Cancer Society estimates that 1 in 9 men develop oral cancer during their lifetime. For women, that number rises to 1 in 11.

Oral cancer screening is non-invasive and only takes a few minutes. However, it is the most effective way to prevent oral cancer.

How is oral cancer screening done?

Oral cancer screenings are a routine part of your general dental exam. We will perform a visual examination of your head, neck, and oral cavity. We look specifically for any signs of oral cancer, including red or white patches, lumps, or thickened tissue. We also perform a swab test on your cheeks and gums to check for signs of oral cancer. The dentist will also use a special light, called a VELscope®, to detect abnormal tissue.

How often is oral cancer screening recommended?

Oral cancer screenings are recommended annually as part of your routine dental checkup. However, if you have a high risk of oral cancer, your dentist may recommend that you come in more frequently for screenings.

If you have a high risk of oral cancer, your dentist may recommend that you come in more frequently for screenings.

How can you prevent Oral Cancer?

The best ways to prevent oral cancer are to avoid smoking and the use of tobacco products.

Smokers are at a much higher risk of developing oral cancer than non-smokers. The most common form of oral cancer is squamous cell carcinoma, which is characterized by an abnormal growth in the lining of the mouth. In fact, 90% of oral cancer cases are related to the use of tobacco and alcohol.
